ENEMY OF MY FRENEMY

Marlowe had decided to call Trisha Hawkins from somewhere public, and far from the hotel. He didn’t know if she could backtrack anything, but it was enough of a risk as it was to bring her in, so he felt a little more secure doing it outside.

She answered on the third ring.

‘I only gave this number to one person, so this had better be Tom Marlowe,’ she said, her voice amused. ‘I saw the news. I’m guessing you did as well?’

Marlowe bit back his first reply.

‘You knew,’ he said. ‘You knew they’d settle. How long had that been arranged?’

‘Longer than you’ve been hanging around with that pretty filly,’ Trisha’s voice was amused as she replied. ‘Nathan had offered the amount before, but your firebrand kept stopping it. Now she’s out, and one of the founders of the company was brutally shot down in a—’

‘Don’t say it,’ Marlowe interrupted. ‘I don’t want to hear the words “domestic terror attack” again for a long time.’

‘I was going to say, “badly botched assassination,” but I’ll agree to your terms,’ Trisha purred. ‘Either way, your woman could never win. When you’re as rich as Nathan Donziger, you play for chips way larger than someone like you can ever imagine.’

Marlowe also bit back a reply to this, forcing his face to smile as he replied.

‘You said to call when I was out of options, and I think you know I’m very close to that.’

‘Oh, you think you still have options?’ Trisha mocked. ‘That’s sweet.’

‘I have a plan in mind,’ Marlowe snapped. ‘I didn’t think Donziger was going to play fair, so I’ve been sorting out backups.’

‘Killing him isn’t a backup,’ Trisha’s voice wavered as wind hit the microphone; Marlowe could tell she’d walked into the open while talking to him. He couldn’t help but wonder where she was going. ‘Maybe you could use Karl Schnitter? You were looking for him the last time we spoke, after all.’

‘And you know by now that was a ruse,’ Marlowe didn’t need to lie anymore – the chances were Trisha already knew where Karl was. ‘I didn’t know how you played into this. In fact, I still don’t.’

There was a long pause on the line, and for a moment Marlowe wondered if the call had disconnected.

However, a moment later, she replied.

‘I hate him.’

‘Okay, I’m happy to hear more,’ Marlowe smiled.

‘His son, Cody, is a … known commodity,’ Trisha replied. ‘He’s a full-blown psycho. Runs security, has fingers in a dozen pies and doesn’t play well with others.’

Marlowe considered this; Trisha Hawkins had worked with Francine Pearce when they created the mercenary heavy security force known as Rattlestone, and although this had been dismantled because of Government intervention, the new company, Phoenix Industries, was still connected into the same circles. If any of the Donziger brats felt Trisha was an interloper to their personal playground, Marlowe could understand why she’d feel this way.

‘He’s cost you work,’ he spoke as a statement more than a question.

‘You speak more like it’s past tense,’ Trisha replied.
